FRAME MATERIALS

PRECISION ENGINEERED POLYMER

We created dimensionally sculpted frames by injecting the higest grades of virgin polymer into computer machined molds. Choose a frame with precision polymer to get high performance at a low cost.

LOW CARBON STAINLESS STEEL

Selected for flexibility, durability and skin sensitivity, we use low carbon stainless steel to craft ultra-strong frames that won’t corrode over time. High tensile strength permits the use of thin sheets that reduce weight. Choose a frame with Low Carbon Stainless Steel for light weight and flexibility of fit.

MAGNESIUM / ALUMINUM ALLOY

Used in aviation and marine applications, we chose the Mg/Al alloy for frames that require thickness but not weight. Highly corosion resistant, hypo-allergenic and malleable to customize fit. Choose a frame with Magnesium/Aluminum Alloy for technical beauty and an adaptable fit.

HANDMADE ACETATE

A bio polymer made from wood pulp or plant fibers, we use this celluosic material in our bench-made premium frames. With the ability to layer and mix colors or textures, the endless styling options compliment the functional properties: hypo-allergenic, lightweight, flexible and sustainable. Choose a frame with Handmade Acetate if you value optical tradition, timeless fashion and artisan craftsmanship.

TITANIUM

As strong as steel, but half its weight, we engineer frames from this exotic material when less is more. Used in aerospace or surgical implants, Titanium naturally creates a passive oxide coating that delivers the ultimate properties for a lightweight, strong and completely inert eyeglass frame. Choose a frame in our Titanium Collection if you want the best in performance and technology.

HINGES

MULTI-BARREL FIXED HINGES

Most eyewear hinges come with only a single barrel and can easily fail or deform, resulting in loose or misaligned temples. By using a multi-barrel construction, we limit stress on any single point and keep temples straight, true and aligned over time.

PERFORMANCE MULTI-BARREL HINGES

An upgrade from our Fixed Multi-Barrel Hinges, our Performance Multi-Barrel Hinges boast a variety of ultra-strong attachment methods to the variety of frame materials used on our Epic Collection.

SCREWLESS HINGES

Developed and patented uniquely at GUNNAR, our screwless hinge design eliminates the weakest point on any eyewear frame. Found primarily on our Low Carbon Stainless Frames, this hinge configuration serves not only as the lens lock, but provides a secure, durable alternative to hinges reliant on screws.

FLEXIBLE SPRING HINGES

To provide the widest range of comfortable fit, we utilize flexible spring hinges of both French and German orgin. Highly engineered with miniature components, we carefully test the range of flex and head pressure to deliver long wearing ergonomics.

POLYCARBONATE

Incredibly strong and shatterproof, polycarbonate lenses provide optical clarity and a high degree of safety. Used as a replacement for glass when security is needed, polycarbonate has a proven record in industrial and optical applications as a workhorse of the industry. GUNNAR uses the highest grade of optically pure polycarbonate to provide crystal clear optics with minimal abberation. If value and safety are a concern, choose Polycarbonate.

POLYAMID

GUNNAR pioneered the application of polyamid, a newer generation of polymer, in optical lenses almost 20 years ago and has refined the process since. Equally as strong as polycarbonate, GUNNAR’s unique blend of polyamid boasts higher clarity and lower haze ratings. Most importantly, the Abbe value (which measures the color dispersion of a lens) of polyamid significantly exceeds polycarbonate for optimal color control If color control, crisp optics and safety are a concertn, then choose Polyamid.

MINERAL GLASS

The same type of glass used in camera lenses and telescopes, mineral glass has become increasingly rare in eyewear despite being the most optically pure of the lens materials. Incredibly scratch resistant, and virtually distortion free, this lens material delivers the highest quality optics possible. If you consider yourself a videophile and value scratch resistance with shockingly clear optics, then choose Mineral Glass.

LENS COATINGS

ANTI-REFLECTIVE COATINGS

Glare and reflections create visual noise when viewing a screen. We coat our lenses with a proprietary blend of multi-stack nano layer that selectively allow light to either be reflected or transmitted. Front side (away from the eye) coatings reflect blue while reducing other reflections to allow a non-intrusive view of the wearer’s eyes. Back side (close to the eye) coatings reducs all parts of the spectrum to eliminate any light reflected off the eyeball to the lens. In higher performance levels, more coating layers work to create an even lower peak reflectance level.

HARD COAT LAYER

Polymer based lenses (Polycarbonate and Polyamid) exit the mold with naturally low scratch resistance. To enhance long term durability, we coat the lenses with a special Hard Coat Layer that protects both surfaces of the lens from scratching, pitting, and oxidation. In higher performance levels we use thicker, more durable Hard Coatings to provide even more longevity.

HYDROPHOBIC COATING

Normal lenses provide a smooth surface that holds moisture in place. This includes both droplet and mist form (ie fogging). We apply a hydrophovic coating to reduce the natural ability of moisture to adhere to the lens, resulting in clearer optics. Lenses remain free from fogging, water droplets, and residue left when water evaporates. If you are prone to fogging, or use your glasses in an environment with water reaching your lenses in any form, then choose Hydrophobic Coatings.

OLEOPHOBIC COATING

To reduce smudges from fingerprints or natural skinoils, we apply an olephobic coating. By naturally repelling the oils from hair and skin, lenses stay cleaner and optics remain clearer over time. If you find that you’re cleaning your lenses frequently with hard-to-remove oils or greasy stains, then choose Oleophobic Coatings.
